Who can join?
The Islands Commission is one of the six Geographical Commissions of the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions (CPMR) and its oldest. Membership of the Islands Commission is linked to membership of the CPMR. The CPMR Islands Commission aims to promote exchange and solidarity among European islands and ensure that their interests in relevant areas are represented and defended especially among the EU institutions.
This means that a Region wishing to become a member of the Islands Commission must also be a member of the CPMR.
Regions are generally defined as the organised territorial authorities representing the first sub-state level under their national Government. However, the cases of island territories that are not covered by this definition can be examined on an ad hoc basis.
Regions interested in learning more about the Island Commission’s actions and activities before formally applying for membership are very welcome to attend the Annual General Assembly as observers.
